The Council of Ministers has authorized this Tuesday the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to process a grant of 400,000 euros for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championship, which will be held in Canfranc between September 24 and 28.
The Government of Spain, through the Higher Sports Council, will participate in the organization of the CanfrancPirineos 2025 World Championship with a grant of 400,000 euros, which was approved this morning by the Council of Ministers in a session where a pack of grants of 60 million euros for sports federations was also agreed upon.
The involvement of the CSD in organizing the World Championship, whose firm commitment existed since the presentation of the candidacy in 2023, guarantees the financial needs of the event and strengthens its status as a “national event,” as it is one of the most important sporting events to be held in Spain this year. The Canfranc World Championship is also supported by the Government of Aragón, the Canfranc City Council, the Provincial Council of Huesca (DPH), and the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA).
Fernando Sánchez, mayor of Canfranc, stated, “we are very satisfied with the involvement of the Higher Sports Council and the Government of Spain in the organization of this world event that will highlight our region and our country, Huesca, and the Pyrenees. The Championship is a challenge for all of us, and the Government understands this because our goal is to demonstrate that large sporting events can be organized in rural areas.”
Sánchez also emphasized that, “the World Championship is also a way to promote our territory throughout the year. It is a national project supported by all levels of public administrations, as well as many private entities.”
The CanfrancPirineos 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championship will feature the participation of over 1,300 athletes from 70 countries. The best runners in the world will compete in the mountains of Canfranc in a championship organized under the umbrella of World Athletics, the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), and with the collaboration of the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), and the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA). A total of five modalities will be contested: ‘Uphill,’ ‘Classic,’ and ‘U20’ in mountain running; and ‘ShortTrail’ and ‘LongTrail’ in trail running.
